With modern orthodontics, it is possible to have straight teeth at any age! It is never too late to seek treatment and have a set of perfectly aligned and properly fitting teeth. There are also a multitude of solutions with different appliances which are invisible or have a minimal visual impact, so that they do not interfere with social activities.
Our preventative dental screening in early childhood examines and evaluates the health of existing baby teeth, including any incoming permanent teeth or possible potential orthodontic problems that might occur – some of which can be prevented or treated with simple solutions.
The ideal time for orthodontic treatment is between age 11 and age 14 years. At that time, all or most of the baby teeth have been lost, and adult teeth should be in place. These are surrounded by a relatively soft bone making orthodontic treatment much easier and a lot more effective, whilst causing very minimal discomfort, if at all.
Prof Mauro Farella is a leading expert in the management of misaligned teeth and/or jaws in children and adults. He is a European board-certified specialist and a registered specialist in orthodontics in New Zealand, with over thirty years of clinical experience. Mauro is originally from Italy and moved to New Zealand in 2009, after being appointed Professor and Head of Orthodontics at the University of Otago in Dunedin. From his home country he proudly retains his creativity and attention to detail. Mauro is an active researcher, always keeping up to date with latest technological advancements, and finding new solutions to improve patients’ experience and quality of life. He is regularly invited as speaker at national and international congresses, to share his knowledge and clinical expertise.
Jen joined Farella Orthodontics in October 2022 and brought with her a healthy mix of work experience including Advertising, Recruitment, Personal Training, Pilates teaching, and, since moving to Dunedin in 2016, Medical Reception/administration and more Pilates teaching! Accordingly, it’s safe to say Jen loves a job where the needs of people are at the forefront. In this role, she loves meeting new and existing patients and really enjoys the “familiar, family atmosphere” which is inevitable in the Orthodontic space, due to the regularity of visits over the course of treatment. She gets a real kick out of seeing positive changes in the smiles and confidence of our patients.
Sherry is Chinese born in New Zealand and can speak English, Mandarin and Cantonese. She was raised in China and moved to Dunedin for university and is now in her second year of studying Oral Health. In her spare time, she enjoys going to the gym, baking, cooking and seeking new recipes. Sherry has been working as a dental assistant with Mauro since November 2022. Her dedication and compassion shine through as she provides supportive care to patients throughout their orthodontic treatments. Sherry is deeply committed to integrating her experiences and knowledge from the field of oral health into her role. She consistently takes the initiative to assist patients in enhancing their oral hygiene while undergoing orthodontic treatments with braces.
Delwyn joined Farella Orthodontics in May 2023 doing reception for the Wednesday clinic. Delwyn has worked in banking and administration for over 30 years and is loving the people contact that working in this clinic brings. She has two grown children, one of whom had orthodontal care under Prof. Farella at the Dunedin dental school. So seeing confidence and self esteem grow and blossom when children have their smiles fixed is very close to her heart. “I love the continuity of orthodontics. You get to know the patients and their family pretty well over the time of treatment”.
Ludovica (Lulu) is originally from Italy, but she has traveled around the world in pursuit of her dream and vocation in the field of dentistry. She graduated in Dentistry in Spain in 2016, and specialized in Orthodontics in Italy in 2020. She is trilingual and speaks Italian, English and Spanish. Lulu is our practice manager and understands that a visit to the dentist/orthodontist can be a source of anxiety for some, so she goes above and beyond to create a welcoming and reassuring environment for all patients. With her organizational skills, leadership, and dedication to patient care, she ensures that every aspect of your experience at Farella Orthodontics runs smoothly and efficiently.
